I am asked frequently, “why do you have a billing service? Isn’t it a hairball? There are so many companies that do it now, is it even profitable?” There is no doubt, medical billing is like a hairball that is very difficult to untangle if not impossible. Even though many claim to be able to do it, very few actually succeed at it. Why do I do it? Well, I guess I just can’t refuse someone who needs help.
When the economy went bad, the only thing still going strong was health care and health information technology. Almost everyone went out, took a class or two, either online or in person, and put a sign out in front of their driveway “medical biller for hire.” The good news is that some of these people actually succeeded. The bad news is that, MOST did not. Most ran through their clients offices like tornadoes destroying anything and everything related to revenue. The sad part is, the practice owners, usually the doctors, found out too late.
